Local brand, The Shop, SALT teams up with artist, Jessica Waterman to deliver colourful, wearable art fashion line

St. John’s, NL, April 4, 2019 – St. John’s based brand, The Shop, SALT is ready to launch their collaborative spring fashion line, SALTXJESSICAWATERMAN, featuring a series of works by artist and Gander native, Jessica Waterman.

The brand has started to reveal each individual piece incrementally on their social media channels with the full line launching this weekend. With only a limited quantity of each item available, SALTXJESSICAWATERMAN will be available for purchase on Sunday, April 7, 2019 at 7:00 pm NST on SALT’s website www.theshopsalt.com

SALT stands for the age-old saying, “Salt of the Earth,” meaning someone who is both genuine and good-natured. The brand strives to celebrate those who represent the sentiment, following their passions, staying true to themselves, and living their life to the fullest. For Emily Evans and Lauren Saunders, Co-Directors of The Shop, SALT, Waterman embodied exactly what they wanted to celebrate.

“This is our second spring season working with an artist to collaborate on a new clothing line that celebrates their creativity.” says Evans, “The project presents an opportunity to experience Jessica Waterman’s work in a different way. Combining an artist's unique craft with fashion design continues to be one of the most inspiring projects we take on as a brand.”

Saunders agrees. “Any time we work with an artist, it’s rewarding to learn about their life, work, and design process. Jessica has been no exception. Her work is so colourful and true to Newfoundland and Labrador’s people and landscape, and it’s brought a new colour palette into SALT’s designs that hasn’t been seen before.”

For Waterman, the project has been as equally rewarding, stating, “The SALT collaboration was such an exciting and inspiring process. Working with other boss ladies from Central NL who already have a great and well established business made me proud. In line with their philosophy and with their passion I wanted to produce colourful and fun designs that represented the types of people you find all across the island.”

“Working together has been so exciting with a lot of OMGs and LOVES written back and forth and many bursts of happy squeals." Waterman adds.

Background

The Shop, SALT Inc.

The Shop, SALT was established in May 2017 by lifelong friends, Emily Evans and Lauren Saunders. After a decade of dreaming about starting their own clothing brand and establishing their own careers, the duo felt that if the aspiration was still strong, it was an endeavour worth exploring. After nearly a year of hard work and $200 shared start-up investment, SALT has grown to be well recognized online-based brand in Newfoundland and Labrador that continues to grow across the country.

Jessica Waterman

Jessica Waterman utilizes both wood and textiles, combining two materials she feels best reflect the character of Newfoundland and Labrador. Finding inspirations in town settings and wilderness alike, Waterman's colour schemes range from bright and joyful to solemn yet powerful, similar to the natural environment of Newfoundland.

A carpenter by trade, Gander born Waterman has also completed costume design from Dalhousie University and textile design from NASCAD, both located in Halifax Nova Scotia. Besides spending her time in her Gander Design Studio, Jessica works in film and television as a costume designer, props procurer, and art director for various productions including Netflix's production "Frontier", CBC television's Republic of Doyle and NL Tourism award winning marketing campaigns.
